Have you ever wondered why most anime characters bleed from the nose? In today’s article, we will talk about one of the biggest clichés of all time, nasal bleeding or nosebleed called hanaji [鼻血].
In most animes, this happens to represent when an anime character feels excited and has perverted thoughts, but how does this happen? Why does it happen? Who created this cliché? Let’s try to find out in this article.
In most works, this happens more with male characters, but it can also happen with female characters. And it doesn’t always mean that the person is excited or thinking dirty thoughts; it can simply be because something might have caused an impact on their eyes or embarrassment. It’s easy to notice that there’s not even time for the person to think, and the nose starts to bleed.
Of course, this visual cliché is just a way to demonstrate what the character is feeling and thinking, but there are also some origins and curiosities behind this story.
What is the origin of the nosebleed cliché?
Nasal bleeding is like a Japanese superstition, similar to the one that says if you sneeze once, someone is saying something good about you; if you sneeze twice, something bad; and if you sneeze three times, you have a cold.
Authors often use this cliché because they find it funny, no particular reason, just like all Japanese traits are similar, the customs in the stories are too.
Some claim that the idea is that sexual excitement causes an increase in blood pressure, which in turn triggers a nosebleed. It is true that blood pressure rises, but this has no relation to the nose.
Some believe that this custom originated because in the past, professional fighters would make small cuts on their foreheads to build tension and atmosphere during a match.
Probably the authors had the same idea of creating this exaggeration to represent this feeling. In other words, there is no story behind this custom of nosebleeding due to excitement in animes.

Anime Characters Bleeding from the Nose
Making a list of animes that have scenes with nosebleeds is very difficult. Almost all animes have these scenes, even if it’s just once. One of the animes with the most nosebleed scenes is Baka to Test to Shōkanjū.
Other famous animes like Naruto, One Piece, Punchline, Dragon Ball, Gurren Lagann, Charlotte, and many others have famous nosebleed scenes. Almost all animes have at least one scene like this.
