Looking for a list of animes with a dragon? Want to meet the most famous draconic characters from anime? Searching for mangas with characters that are dragons? This article will present the best dragon animes of all time.
Dragons are enormous and powerful serpentine mythological creatures, often seen as being of magical nature. These animes focus on the impact of dragons – whether they are reinvented, extinct, or living and breathing alongside humans, and may feature dragons as main characters.
Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon
Miss Kobayashi is an ordinary office worker living a boring life alone in her small apartment – until she saves the life of a female dragon in danger.
The dragon, named Tohru, has the ability to magically transform into a lovely human girl (although with horns and a long tail!), and she will do anything to repay her debt of gratitude, whether Miss Kobayashi likes it or not.
With a very persistent and loving dragon as a roommate, nothing is easy, and Miss Kobayashi’s normal life is about to explode! One of the most popular comedy animes of all time.

Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri
In August 20XX, a gate suddenly appears in the Ginza district of Tokyo, unleashing a portal where dragons, monsters, medieval knights, and other fantasy beings come from another world and wreak havoc in Tokyo.
The Japan Self-Defense Force takes action against these monsters and pushes them back through the “Gate.” The Third Recon Team is sent to the “Special Region” led by officer (and otaku) Youji Itami.
On their travels, they join a beautiful elf who is a survivor of the dragon’s wrath and guides the group through the new dangerous world. The anime is quite popular and has at least two seasons.

Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan
Dragon Pilot is an anime available on Netflix in Portuguese. Direct and innocent, Hisone Amakasu is a rookie in the Self-Defense Force working at the Gifu Air Base of the Self-Defense Force.
She was struggling with the fact that she sometimes hurt people unintentionally with her innocent words and decided to join the Air Self-Defense Force, hoping to keep some distance from people.
This decision led her to a fateful encounter that profoundly changed her life. It was the “OTF” dragon hidden in the base that chose Hisone as its pilot. When he soared into the sky with Hisone, her fate as a dragon pilot was sealed. It is said that dragons hold a key to the future of the world.

Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo
Angelise is the first princess of the Misurugi Empire. She is the renowned ruler of the Empire until one day she discovers the shocking truth that she is a “Norma” – an irregular being who cannot use “Mana” and is treated as “things” and not as people.
Having her name stripped from her, Ange isolates herself on a remote island. There, she meets a group of Norma women who spend their days hunting dragons that have come to invade. Themes such as death, torture, abuse, martyrdom, and human cruelty are addressed in the anime.
The anime has somewhat outdated traits and clings to some traditional Japanese clichés, but it also features characters with depth and genuine feelings, has a bit of mecha, and follows satisfying details for Berserk fans. One should not judge it by the first episodes!

Kuutei Dragons – Drifting Dragons
The Quin Zaza drainage ship flies through the skies, hunting dragons that hide in the clouds. A single big catch means full coffers and all the meat they can eat, while failure means an empty wallet and an even emptier stomach.
Join us as we document the great adventures of the crew, chasing dreams of the sky, dragons, and gourmet cuisine! This anime is inspired by Monster Hunter and Guns of Icarus, bringing a new and interesting fantasy world to the table that feels adventurous by nature, which is rare in anime.
Drakers are like sailors, living in large airships. This anime is very beautiful and magnificent, never shying away from showing the scale of the world, the Dragons, and the ships. Everything in this anime is huge and gorgeous. Each new Dragon introduced is just a spectacle to behold.

Ryuu no Haisha (Movie)
Also known as The Dragon Dentist (2017). The story takes place in Dragon Country. Nonoko is a newly appointed dentist and her mission is to protect the dragon, the guardian of the country, from the bacteria of tooth decay.
One day, amidst increasingly fierce battles with the neighboring country, Nonoko finds an unconscious boy soldier from the enemy country in the dragon’s tooth.
His name is Bell, and he was resurrected from within the tooth by the dragon – a supernatural phenomenon that legend says occurs before a great disaster. As Nonoko and Bell go through a series of fierce battles, they eventually learn to accept their fate.

Honorable Mentions of Animes with Dragons
Wakfu – Although it is a French anime, its traits resemble anime a bit, its story and approach also closely resemble Japanese works. The story is based on a tactical MMORPG game that was part of my childhood and its predecessor Dofus. The animation has 3 seasons and is available on Netflix, featuring one of the best villains of all time (Nox).
Dragon Ball – Although it doesn’t focus on dragons, if I don’t mention this anime here someone will crucify me.
Tales From Earthsea – A great medieval dragon movie with Studio Ghibli style that is available on Netflix.
Some others are:
- Dragounaut – The Resonance;
- Fairy Tail – Has many notable dragon characters;
- Blue Dragon;
- Zero no tsukaima;
