How is the number of seasons of an anime defined?

In American TV, series are often canceled or a new season is announced before the current one ends. Rarely does a series go more than a year without receiving its new season. Unfortunately, this is different in Japan.

There are so many anime series (and mangas) that broadcasting companies do not know which will be hits and which will not at the time of establishing a contract with a studio. Perhaps at some point your favorite work catches the company’s attention.

The fact is that when a studio gets the green light to make a series, it is usually for one season. In other words, when the studio receives the green light to start production, the number of episodes is already decided.

Why doesn’t my anime get a continuation?

This happens because most animes are made just to promote the manga, novel, or original work. The studios’ goal is to generate profit and increase the original author’s earnings; if that doesn’t happen, goodbye chances of a new season.

Most 12-episode animes do not receive continuations because they are just a test made to boost the original material. When an anime already has 24 episodes, its chance of success or of already being finished is higher.

This does not mean that if your favorite anime has 12 episodes, it is doomed not to have continuations; it just needs to be good enough. Generally, 12-episode animes that have continuations receive announcements even before the end.

Animation studios usually release 12 episodes and wait about 3 to 6 months (up to 2 seasons) to release another 12 episodes or a continuation, whether through a series, OVAs, or movies.

Unfortunately, some end up having 2 seasons, but when it comes time to announce the third, that never happens. Another important factor that prevents an anime from having a continuation is the lack of original material to make it. This leads to years of waiting.

Some animes are released and quickly catch up to the manga. It may even take 2 years to have enough material for a new season, which discourages some studios from making such a continuation.

Another reason many animes do not get a new season is the high production cost. Generally, animes spend a lot to be produced and take a long time; sometimes the profit is not recovered.

Should I lose hope for a new season?

Even if your anime came out 5 years ago, sold poorly, or lost all staff or studio, there may still be a small chance of a continuation or reboot. So, never lose hope, but don’t get your expectations too high.

It is true that it is becoming increasingly difficult to generate profit from animes, as sales of Blu-rays and DVDs that used to generate profit for new seasons are declining more and more; fortunately, streaming sites have come to improve the animation industry that was in crisis.

In recent years, old animes have been receiving continuations and reboots thanks to streaming sites that see potential in such works. We have had works that ended with fillers or left open-ended, and after 5 years, gained an adaptation with an ending.

As tragic as the animation scenario you wish to see a continuation may seem, do not get discouraged or despair. There have been cases of animes that seemed hopeless gaining a new season, just as super popular animes in the West have been forgotten.

When should I lose hope for a new season? Below are some factors that will negatively affect the chances of a new season. If your anime has any of these factors, you should significantly lower your expectations.

Many years have passed and the original material has been completed – If the first season was released 5 years ago and the manga or novel has been finished for more than 3 years, it’s better to lower your expectations for a new season.

Does the initial studio have a good reputation for making continuations? – Try to analyze the studio that made the first season. Does it have a reputation for making animes without continuations? If so, it’s better to lower your expectations.

Even if the studio or staff is having problems, the anime can still be passed to another studio or director. Not that the result will be better. There have been disastrous cases like Rosario + Vampire.

If the studio is involved in several larger projects, it may abandon or simply ignore a new season or continuation of a certain anime. Like in the case of Sunrise forgetting Accel World because of Love Live.

Adversities – In addition to those mentioned, other adversities can occur, such as the author of the work being imprisoned, passing away without finishing the work, the studio catching fire, and other things that have happened in recent decades.

What defines whether an anime will get a continuation?

There are numerous factors that determine whether a work will get a continuation or new season. Below are some of these factors; then research information about the anime you want to know if it has chances or not.

Original Material – If the work or anime adaptation has many volumes and sufficient material, this increases the hopes for a new season. Otherwise, it is necessary to wait a few years, or the author needs to advance the story for the studio.

The Anime is Original – If the anime is original, it was probably made with the intention of being completed in one or two seasons. If it is a big hit like Code Geass, they release continuations even without necessity.

Money – Two seasons of an anime can cost over 5 million dollars. If the first season generates enough profit, the chances of a new season will increase.

Popularity – A strong factor to increase the chances of a new season, as it affects other factors like money. Unfortunately, understand that popularity in the West does not affect as much as popularity in Japan.

Number of Sales of the manga or novel – If the number of sales of recent volumes of the original material rises by at least 20%, the chances of a new season are considerable.

The Anime is on a Streaming Site – If the anime is on major sites like Netflix or Crunchyroll, with airing in various countries around the world, this increases the anime’s profit, increasing the chances of a new season.

Number of Merchandise – It’s not just sales of the original material or DVDs; if the work has figures or otaku objects that are successful, it is very likely that this will increase the chances of a new season. Does your anime have popular waifus?

If the work you like, besides receiving animes, receives OVAs, movies, games, dramas, events, and other similar things, and if there is original material to be adapted, it is very likely that it will get a new season.

Sales and profit are probably the most important of the three factors for the probability of an anime’s continuation. If there is a reason why 90% of animes never receive a sequel, it would be because they did not make enough money back.
