In this article, we will answer a very simple question: How long does the trip to Japan take? We are talking about the time it takes to get to Japan, whether by plane, ship, or swimming.
The answer to this question is quite relative; it all depends on where you live, which airline you choose, etc. If you confused this question with how long I can travel in Japan as a tourist, the answer is a maximum of 3 months.
How long does a flight to Japan take
In September 2016 and 2018, I traveled to Japan from the State of Goiás to Narita Tokyo, flying over Disney in Tokyo with Emirates Airlines, which had a layover in Dubai. I departed from BrasÃlia and another time from Goiânia, with a layover in São Paulo.
The trip took about 32 hours, including the plane changes in São Paulo and Dubai. The time spent on the plane was about 15 hours from São Paulo to Dubai, and about 9 hours from Dubai to Tokyo, totaling 1 day on the plane.
Most flights from São Paulo to Tokyo take about 30 hours, which is 1 day on the plane. Some airlines may take up to 50 hours, making plane changes in up to 2 different countries before reaching Tokyo.
If you live in Portugal, the trip is faster and usually takes about 16 to 20 hours. If you travel to Osaka or Sapporo, depending on the type of layover you have, you may take up to 4 hours longer.
There are two ways to fly to Japan from Brazil. You can use planes that cross Europe and Africa or planes that layover in the USA or CANADA and cross the Pacific Ocean.

How long does a ship trip to Japan take
All of this will depend on the cruise or freighter you take; most of them take about 40 to 60 days. A trip on a cruise or freighter usually makes several stops, requiring visas and vaccinations.
If the ship does not make stops, it can reach Japan in up to 15 days. Unfortunately, it is not easy to find ship trips to reach Japan without making changes or spending days in various countries.
Various other factors such as weather and time can speed up or delay your ship trip; some options can take up to 3 months to reach the destination. This option is more viable for those who wish to explore the seas, as its price is much higher.
The difference between a freighter and a cruise ship is that a freighter does not carry as many people and is usually cheaper. A ship trip should be booked well in advance, up to 6 months before the trip.
Curiosities about the time and distance to Japan
Below we will do some calculations and reach interesting and curious conclusions. The straight-line distance between São Paulo and Tokyo is 18,555 kilometers. We will use this distance as a basis and make calculations using impossible transportation.
If there were a road from Brazil to Japan for cars, a car traveling at 100 km/h would take about 7 days or 185 hours to reach the destination. This is calculating the 18 thousand kilometers in a straight line between São Paulo and Tokyo.
Unfortunately, no highway can be perfectly straight. So if there were no sea, it would take us about 15 days by car, considering the curves and small breaks. Imagine if there were a tunnel that crossed the Pacific Ocean?
If it were possible to walk to Japan, it would take about 154 days walking at 5 km/h without breaks to reach Tokyo. For an average human, it is impossible to walk that far without stopping. It would take us up to a year or more to reach Japan on foot.
A bicycle traveling at 25 km/h would take about 30 days to reach Japan. A bullet train traveling at 300 km/h would take about 2 days to reach Tokyo.
