The Origin of Temaki

The temaki is a type of sushi in the shape of a cone made and eaten by hand. This dish originated in the 19th century as a fast food option for the Japanese living in Edo, a city that later became the capital Tokyo.

At that time, sushi kiosks were the most popular option due to the ease and speed of preparation and consumption. The conical shape was created so that the soy sauce, which was served with the temaki, would not drip on people’s clothes.

The temaki became very popular at that time precisely because it had a quick preparation, as this dish is prepared and consumed with one’s own hands, since it was very difficult to pick it up with chopsticks.

The Different Types of Temaki

There is an endless variety of flavors and fillings for temaki, but we will show here only some of the available options:

Salmon and ricotta temaki: This mixture of salmon and cream cheese may seem a bit strange, but the result is very tasty. Moreover, this dish is not very high in calories.

Salmon and green onion temaki: This is a more traditional option for temaki, as it is prepared only with nori, salmon, and green onion. Despite having few ingredients, this is a great option for those looking for a good temaki.

Salmon and cucumber temaki: This is the perfect temaki for those looking for a recipe that includes salmon but is more elaborate. This filling is made with salmon, cream cheese, green onion, and cucumber, and is a nutritious option that combines various different textures.

Salmon with cream cheese temaki: In this dish, the filling consists of pieces of salmon, green onion, and a lot of cream cheese. This combination, although a bit simple, is very tasty and can please various types of palates.

Skin temaki: The skin can be a great option for those who do not like to eat raw fish much, as this temaki is filled with fried salmon skin. This fried skin gives a very crunchy touch to the dish, making the final result very tasty.

Carrot and cucumber temaki with miso: For those who enjoy vegetables, it can be a good option to prepare this temaki that has carrot and cucumber as the main ingredients, but with a touch of miso that makes a difference in the final flavor.

Shimeji temaki: Another alternative for those who want to leave fish aside is to prepare temaki with shimeji. This well-seasoned mushroom adds a very nice flavor to the dish and does not take long to prepare.

Salmon with kale temaki: Perhaps the most unusual option on this list, this recipe includes fried kale, with the idea of adding a crunchy touch to the dish. This temaki has rice, kale, salmon, and cream cheese as the main ingredients.
