In this article, we will recommend an anime that is being considered by critics as one of the best fiction, mystery and suspense animes of recent years. Still being released, Summer Time Rendering got its animation adaptation this year, having premiered, more specifically, last month (in April 2022) during the current spring season.

The Anime

- Anime Recommendation: “Summer Time Rendering”

Adapted from a manga written and illustrated by Yasuki Tanaka, Summer Time Rendering is being produced and animated by the studio OLM (Oriental Light and Magic), the same responsible for the animated versions of Pokémon and Yokai Watch. The anime already has a high rating on myanimelist, totaling 8.35 with only a few episodes available (less than half of what is expected). The series is set to have a total of 25 episodes released.

The global airing of the series is handled by Disney Plus (Disney’s streaming service).

Synopsis

The anime takes place on an island called Hitogashima and mainly involves the characters Shinpei (the main character), Mio, and Ushio.

Shinpei, after the death of his parents, begins to live with the Kofune family and their two daughters: Mio and Ushio. Shinpei had left his hometown to continue his life in the city; however, an unexpected event causes Shinpei to return after Ushio tragically drowns while attempting to rescue a little girl and, unfortunately, dies. At the funeral, there are rumors that Ushio had bruises, which leads Shinpei to seek more information about the case.

Shinpei, suspecting that a murder occurred, tries to uncover what really happened, until strange things begin to occur and the story of an old folk tale about entities called “Shadows” starts to come to light.

Analysis

So far, I have watched the first five episodes of the series. I can say that I really enjoyed what I have seen so far, especially the way the characters interact and how the plot develops. The way fiction is gradually introduced during the first episodes is also something to highlight.

Although at first the characters may seem clichéd, what makes the anime interesting is the complex and surprising order of events, making it difficult to predict what will happen in the next episode. The concept of time travel fits perfectly with the idea of shadows (or “clones”) within the anime.

Moreover, the soundtrack is of excellent quality, especially the opening and ending.
